Mr Carey himself was the Mayor of Vincent prior to being elected to state parliament as the member for Perth in 2017. "He's leaving Perth residents behind a seat that he thinks is his easiest path to getting into parliament." "Basil Zempilas has consistently committed to Perth residents and now he's jumping ship in the western suburbs, not in Perth, and the reason is because of his failed record," he said. WA Homelessness Minister John Carey, who recently clashed with Mr Zempilas over a service for vulnerable women, criticised what he called the Lord Mayor's "naked political ambition". Ms Mettam said she understood Mr Zempilas lived in Churchlands and it therefore made sense that he would stand for that seat, rather than the seat of Perth. "I'm feeling very confident as leader in the lead-up to the 2025 election." "Basil's membership is only an asset we'll be going through a grassroots preselection process it will be up to the membership … in Churchlands about who is preselected there," she said. Ms Mettam dismissed any suggestion her role as leader could be under threat from Mr Zempilas and insisted her focus was on building a team for the next election. "It's fantastic to see a number of high-quality candidates come forward and express interest in running for the Liberal Party in the lead-up to 2025," she said. WA Liberal Leader Libby Mettam welcomed the announcement. "The only thing in my control is trying to win preselection for the seat of Churchlands." "I appreciate that people might say things like that, but I absolutely know from my background, from my own working life … anybody who gets ahead of themselves ultimately doesn't get anywhere near close to where they might be trying to go," he said. When asked about his hopes to become WA premier one day, Mr Zempilas refused to give much away. He said he'd spoken to Liberal leader Libby Mettam on several occasions, and always received encouragement. "I think people understand my desire to take what I've learnt as Lord Mayor – to take the learnings about how this local government operates to the next tier."
